Halloween Cat Tricks and Treats

Happy Halloween!

We have cat tricks and treats.

Our 2nd annual music festival was a beautiful celebration of queer Joy!

Final Budget for 3 day festival: $12,602.10

32 artists performing and working the fest were paid in total: $10,900.

Expenses (Airbnb, groceries, decorations, flyers, shirts, misc): $1702.10

We need to reclaim funds for our community in the amount of $8686.87 with a minimum of $4584.77 to make the initial goal of $8500.

Let's go! https://www.grimalkinrecords.com/donate

Is there anyone doing music festivals where over 86% of its budget goes directly to the artists performing and working the fest? Yes, we had volunteers too for the first time and couldn't have done it without their help, but we know other fests with access to money, resources, and connections can do better.

Grimalkin believes that if you cannot pay artists fairly since you'd have no festival, label, streaming service, etc. without artists, then you have an awful business model and have no business being in business.

If a small collective and nonprofit with a budget only of $50k in 2023 can pull off a 3 day fest that had a diverse lineup and paid folks decently, then sure as hell can millionaires (SXSW) and many others. We must demand and do better.

If they don’t have the means to make artists a priority in terms of pay for their music fest, perhaps that's because they are making it bigger and grander than they should. Start small and build up. Or maybe they're just money and resource hoarders for themselves and for a few already wealthy elite. Either way, they should stop and artists should say no thank you and work with folks determined to make positive and artist-centered changes.
