Hiring

Grimalkin is hiring volunteers

We are currently hiring for a variety of volunteer leadership positions. Our intention is that these roles will eventually turn into paid positions as we progress financially.

There are 3 of us that have been long-time volunteers for years, and as we progressed financially, we're now paying them stipends. We strongly believe in sharing our progress with the community and those who have invested their time and energy into helping us progress.

We've proven ourselves. In 2022, over $10k was distributed back to artists and in 2023, that rose to over $35k.

I've taken on so many additional tasks that we need to do in order for us to progress. I cannot do all of those necessary things (grant writing, research, build a donor structure, grant reporting, attend several technical assistance trainings monthly, tracking goals and progress, building structures for sustainability, building a donor base with all our supporters, creating necessary policies and procedures, writing a strategic plan, stakeholder research, planning grassroots fundraising, planning our fest, and more) on top of all the daily running of Grimalkin that I was previously doing.

We are working towards radical change and moving increasingly more into a non-hierarchical, worker led work space and collective, but it takes time. In order to achieve this, we need folks who are passionate about our mission and who are willing to step up to help us progress forward with the knowledge that we've proven to put back our financial progress into the folks who have helped us get there.

There are many different roles and some are smaller tasks and others are multi-task projects, but all of them are critical to our success and keep Grimalkin running. Some roles can have more than one person and be collaborative.

At this point, as the executive director, I've had to take on additional tasks every year as I already mentioned, and many of those tasks are fulltime jobs in themselves and are necessary for us to sustain this work. My focus needs to be on those tasks and projects, and I am no longer able to carry everything myself. I need the community's support for Grimalkin to continue.

I feel and I hope you do too that I've more than proven my commitment to our mission and community and in building community and community care. I did it for years without any pay, and I am doing it now for no where close to a living wage, but that has to end or I can't do this fulltime and our progress will take a group effort.

I've literally invested fulltime+ hours of labor for over 3 years and my life's savings from being a teacher and vocational counselor. I've supported countless artists in a variety of ways. I've dedicated myself to radical grassroots organizing towards helping to make things better for our community and for marginalized working musicians. I am part of this community as a trans, nonbinary, neurodivergent and disabled musician and artist. This is NOT charity work. It's community organizing and mutual aid and support work.

I've downplayed my role because I'm uncomfortable with getting credit, but we've only financially progressed the past 2 years due to my countless hours researching, writing and rewriting, and reporting on grants. Our grassroots support has decreased since June 2020. Surprise! People were vowing to do better then and have since dropped off.

We have NOT progressed nearly as much as people think as a collective. People have literally been riding on the fruits of my labor. Our financial progress has been the result of grants we've received that I have written. Carla writes one of our grants for us every 2 years. Last year she applied to one for us and I applied to 9. We received 7, which is unheard of, especially for a new nonprofit. We've only had the status since February 2022.

If you are interested and have the capacity to commit to helping us, let me know and I can share with you what roles are available and we can go from there.

Necessary skills are a willingness to learn, a commitment to follow through and consistent, regular and effective communication skills.

We're looking for folks interested in radical change, grassroots organizing and collaboration. We are NOT working to help ourselves or others in breaking in or climbing the music industry's ladder.

We’re also not a stepping stone for you to take, gain music industry capitalistic success and then leave us behind. We want and expect people who reach a larger platform and monetary success to leverage any capitalistic success in supporting Grimalkin’s mission. If you’re looking for fame and fortune, we aren’t for you. We want a living wage and believe in reclaiming resources and money back into our community.

We're creating alternatives to support ourselves as a community in which those music standards and existing structures are obsolete. We may still participate in some since we live under capitalism, but we'll no longer need them to support ourselves as working musicians.

If this sounds like something you want to have an important part in cultivating, then let me know.

Email spartanjetplex@gmail.com if interested. make sure to let us know why Grimalkin and address the qualifications outlined in this post.
